this is a wonderful concept, but i didn't read anywhere about making sure each poor american child had one. i guess our government can't afford to buy them because of all those tax cuts for the rich and money spent on the war in iraq.

Well, you did note that they're not giving these away. They're selling them to government to give away and expect to make "thousands of millions" on them. If our government would like to buy them, I'm sure they're for sale.
I think computers at a young age are overrated, personally, and you know I love me some computing. But as an educational tool, they should be secondary to basic literacy and numeracy.
